In August 2020, Morningstar data confirmed that assets under management in ESG-aligned funds surpassed $1 trillion for the first time on record, and in the second quarter of 2020 ESG fund flows represented almost a third of all European fund sales, with sustainable equity funds gathering 63% more new money than traditional equity funds over the same period. Looking to the recovery, the report sets out four recommendations for international financial centers: take the lead on ensuring collaboration and cooperation across the sustainable finance ecosystem nationally and internationally; build sustainable finance expertise and capacity through education and thought leadership; leverage the digitalization of financial services — including improved ESG data, digital business models and blockchain-based trust mechanisms — to embed sustainability into the financial industry of the future; and identify concrete business opportunities.
