The report finds that UK-based financial and related professional services generated a trade surplus of £114.1bn in 2023, equivalent to 4.2% of GDP, with financial services alone contributing £92.2bn — the largest trade surplus of any UK sector — helping to partly offset the UK's £187.7bn trade-in-goods deficit. The industry's total tax contribution reached a record £110.2bn for the year ending March 2023. The report also highlights the industry's role in day-to-day life, noting that annual transactions made with contactless payment cards reached 18.3bn in 2023, up 7.6% year on year, and that 87% of the population used at least one form of remote banking during 2023. Pension annuity contracts soared by 24% in 2024 to 89,600, a new ten-year high, while the UK is home to 44% of all LawTech start-ups in Europe, with the sector now worth at least $30bn globally.
