Produced by Luxembourg for Finance in partnership with McKinsey & Company, this report examines how financial services jobs and skills are evolving amid economic instability, shifting consumer expectations, and new technology. It notes that financial services is moving from cycles of change lasting around 20 years to cycles of just 18 to 36 months, and that by 2026 more than 90% of the global population will have a smartphone — a level of connectivity that, combined with 5G, quantum computing, AI, and the Internet of Things, will transform everyday interactions with financial services. A recent McKinsey survey cited in the report found that organisations identify data analytics (43%), IT management (26%) and executive management (25%) as their greatest skills gaps, with reskilling programmes most often focused on critical thinking and decision making (44%), leadership (41%), and advanced data analysis (36%).
The report finds that automation offers the greatest potential in data processing (around 70%) and data collection (around 65%), activities on which financial professionals currently spend about half their time — from mortgage brokers and insurance sales agents completing forms to underwriters and bank tellers verifying data. Yet automation will not replace the need for people: through 2030, demand for skills such as creativity, critical thinking, decision making, project management, problem solving and complex information processing is expected to grow at cumulative double-digit rates, and demand for entrepreneurship and initiative-taking will grow especially quickly. The report examines how these dynamics will play out across banking, wealth management, asset management, private equity and venture capital, and insurance, and highlights emerging cross-sectoral roles in sustainability leadership, regulatory compliance, and leading-edge technology.
The report also emphasises the meaningful nature of careers in finance: financial organisations play a fundamental role in financing economic growth and the transition to net zero, and the report frames this as an opportunity for professionals to be at the forefront of innovation, sustainability and economic change. In his foreword, Luxembourg for Finance CEO Nicolas Mackel notes that upskilling and reskilling are becoming fundamental tools for those already working in the sector to continue in careers that provide purpose, and thanks McKinsey for its partnership in producing the report, which the authors hope will provide a valuable contribution for people looking to start, or further, their career in financial services.
