Prepared by Kantar Polska for Future Finance Poland (FFP), this study draws on Kantar's Sustainability Sector Index 2023 — based on 32,000 interviews across 42 sectors in 33 countries, including a Polish sample of 1,003 respondents — to examine how consumers perceive the financial services, banking and insurance category in the context of ESG and sustainability. The report notes that under EU directives, over 3,000 companies in Poland were already obligated to produce their first ESG report in 2024, and that brands rating highly on Kantar's Sustainability BrandZ Index grew brand value by 31% in 2022 versus 2021, ahead of the average 23% growth of the world's Top 100 most valuable brands.
The study segments consumers into four attitudinal groups — Actives, Believers, Considerers and Dismissers — and finds that Poland shows sharper year-on-year polarisation than the global average: between 2022 and 2023, the Actives segment fell by 7 percentage points to 25%, while Believers rose by 9 points to 44%. Trust emerges as central to sustainable change, with 63% of Polish respondents saying they pay a lot of attention to environmental and societal issues in the news, yet 69% in Poland (compared with 67% across Europe) worry that brands engage with social issues purely for commercial reasons, and 52% on average across sectors report having seen or heard false or misleading sustainability claims from brands.
Within this landscape, the financial services, banking and insurance category performs comparatively well: it ranks third-highest among 42 sectors in Poland for consumer perceptions of meeting sustainability expectations, and records one of the lower perceived-greenwashing scores among sectors surveyed, at 51%, compared with 60% for social media and 58% for meat products. The report attributes this relatively strong position to banks and financial institutions having been among the first businesses to offer dedicated green products and communicate on sustainability to a wide audience. It also finds that consumer expectations of the sector concentrate on the "S" (social) dimension of ESG — particularly business corruption and tax evasion, economic inequality, poverty, and fair wages — rather than purely environmental concerns, pointing to where financial brands can most credibly focus their sustainability communication.
