The Berlin Finance Initiative (BFI) promotes traditional and new financial market players in Berlin, with the stated aim of building a distinctive finance and technology location in Europe. According to a 2022 report by the Berlin Senate Department for Economics, the initiative originated with the Ostdeutscher Bankenverband (East German Banking Association); it is operated by BFI International GmbH and led by co-founder and Co-CEO Achim Oelgarth and Co-CEO Maximilian Riege. The BFI works with the State of Berlin and Berlin Partner for Business and Technology, is part of the federal Digital Hub Initiative and is a co-shareholder of the de:hub FinTech Berlin. Berlin's financial sector profile is shaped by financial technology. The Investitionsbank Berlin (IBB) reported in January 2026 that around 189 fintech companies operate in the city, accounting for roughly 12,000 jobs. The House of Finance and Tech Berlin (HoFT), a support agency for the city's fintech industry initiated by the BFI and Berlin Partner in cooperation with the Senate, was officially founded in April 2024 and began operations on 1 September 2024. Berlin's securities exchange, founded in 1685, has since 1 January 2026 operated together with Tradegate Exchange as the Tradegate Berlin Stock Exchange (Tradegate BSX).
