Beijing ranked 16th in the 40th edition of the Global Financial Centres Index (GFCI 40), published by Z/Yen and the China Development Institute in September 2026, up six places from 22nd in GFCI 39. Beijing Financial Street, in Xicheng District on the north side of Chang'an Avenue, covers 2.59 square kilometres; its development followed the State Council's approval of Beijing's revised city master plan in October 1993. According to the Beijing Municipal Government, the district was home to nearly 1,900 financial institutions in 2023, including 175 headquarters-level institutions. The Beijing Financial Street Research Institute, founded in 2012, is a think tank on the development of China's financial industry. It is the sole academic support unit for the annual Financial Street Forum and provides a platform for exchange between government departments, regulators and financial institutions. Its research focuses on sci-tech, green, inclusive, pension and digital finance.
