H.E. Ahmed Jasim Al Zaabi, Chairman of Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development and Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM) met Mrs Laura May-lung Cha, Chairman of the Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX) during the World Economic Forum 2024 in Davos. During the meeting, they discussed enhancing cooperation between financial institutions in Abu Dhabi and Hong Kong. The meeting was attended by Badr Al Olama, Acting Director General of ADIO, Nicolas Aguzin, CEO of HKEX, and Arvind Ramamurthy, Chief of Market Development at ADGM as well as senior executives from both parties.

🌐 Speaking within the World Economic Forum in Davos, the AIFC Governor discussed the significance of blockchain and fintech innovations, outlining key directions and results of the AIFC in these areas.

💼 First, he highlighted the implementation of a AIFC Digital Assets Activities (DAA) rulebook.  This set of regulations is specifically designed for crypto exchanges and a range of service providers, including brokers/dealers, custodians, asset and fund managers. The AIFC’s approach in crafting these guidelines was informed by international standards, ensuring a robust and globally relevant framework.

💡 The AIFC Governor also emphasized that a significant part of the AIFC's rulebook relates to stablecoin issuers, with the importance of stablecoin issuance increasing lately. Thanks to the rulebook, AIFC participants will be able to issue fiat-pegged stablecoins. This, in turn, contributes to stability and the broader adoption of know-how.

🌟 In June 2022, the AIFC launched a pilot project between banks in Kazakhstan and crypto exchanges licensed in the AIFC. The project's goal was to test the opening of accounts for crypto exchanges and their clients in Kazakhstani banks. Eight exchanges participated in the project, including BN KZ Technologies Limited, Bybit, and Upbit, as well as eight Kazakhstani banks. The total turnover of the project was around $240 million.
